How to Take Care of Mums and Keep Them Blooming Every Season?
It's not difficult to care for mums. You can even keep them happy all year. We'll be discussing how to care for mums both indoors as well as outdoors. No matter where your mums are planted, make sure they have lots of buds that haven't yet bloomed. This will allow you to enjoy the flowers for longer.
How to take care of indoor mums?
Many people don't know that mums are often root-bound when they are purchased. A larger pot is necessary to keep mums happy and healthy. Use a high-quality potting soil mixture, and place a layer of it in the bottom. Then, break up the roots and put your mum into the new pot. All you have to do after you have re-potted the mums are the following:
- Place your plants within a sunny spot in your house. Make sure you have a window that lets in lots of sunlight and gets at least four hours of direct sun each day.
- Make sure the soil is moist. While you don't want your mums to become too dry, it is a good idea to keep them moist. You can put the pot in a bucket or container with 2 to 3 inches of water so that the plant absorbs the water. Make sure you water mums at the bottom of the plant, not at the top.
- For lasting blooms, deadhead frequently. You can make your mums more beautiful by removing dead stems/leaves and wilted flowers. It also helps your plant bloom longer because there are no dead blooms or stems competing with the nutrients and water that newer buds and blossoms require.
- When mums have stopped blooming, you can plant them outdoors when the weather warms up. You can enjoy mums blooming once they are inside, but you should keep them green until you transplant them outdoors.
Caring for outdoor mums
Like indoor mums, gardening outdoors or in the yard requires lots of sunlight. You should plant mums in well-draining soil. Organic soil or compost will give you strong, healthy mums. You should also take care of mums who have been planted outdoors.
- Make sure mums have plenty of space. You should plant mums at least 18 inches away from other plants to allow for root growth.
- Water is important, but not excessively. Water below the soil level to prevent fungi. You will need to water mums more often after the first week.
- Deadhead. Your mums will bloom longer if you remove wilted flowers and dead stems.
- Mulch may be necessary for mums in colder areas. Mulch should be three to four inches in height and cover the whole base of your mums.
- Don't worry if your mums get frostbitten. You can simply trim them to about one inch above the ground and leave the mulch around the plants. Your mums will re-grow in spring.
Avoid Weeds near Your Mums
Mums are facing an enemy: weeds. Your mums will be in competition with weeds for space and sun, water, nutrients, and other resources. You can protect them by using proactive weed control, such as a weed barrier or mulch and compost.
